ok... my computer crashed again, and this latest time, it actually blamed a file called kmixer.sys for crashing the computer. after it rebooted, the microsoft feedback page for the error reporting tool said i probably had bad memory. WRONG! i already tested the memory and it works PERFECTLY. i used memtest86+. microsoft's feedback page did say that there was also a possibility that i had a hardware or device driver problem. i already knew that, because the BSOD (blue screen of death) had specifically fingered kmixer.sys as the culprit. so kmixer.sys is the kernel audio mixer. this means the problem is the audio driver, or the audio hardware. so, at least i know what the problem is now. what can i do? i can try disabling the audio driver, which will disable all sound, but theoretically it should prevent my computer from crashing anymore. we will see. hopefully i am correct, and the via vinyl audio codec is at fault, and i will not need to suspect anything else on my system of being faulty. if the motherboard’s onboard audio is faulty, i can simply add in a pci sound card and install a driver and things will be fine. i already have an extra one lying around, just waiting to be used: the creative labs sound blaster live! 24-bit, to be specific. so, things should be fine, hopefully.
